Much to Respawn, EA and Microsoft’s relief, the hotly-anticipated “don’t call it Call of Duty with mechs” first-person shooter Titanfall proved to be rather good for those who are into that sort of thing. But there’s been one thing that a few people have been complaining about, and unfortunately for Respawn it’s a fairly major issue: the matter of matchmaking. Some players were complaining of teams that were so mismatched they’d pit incomplete teams of players with single-digit levels against full, six-player teams of those who had “regenerated” Prestiged, for Call of Duty vets several times. Now, level in Titanfall is more a measure of how much you’ve played rather than actually how skilled you are, but it still doesn’t inspire much confidence in the “matchmaking” routines if it considers that to be a good matchup, particularly with lop-sided teams. The problem, it seems, was that Titanfall was prioritizing getting people into a game with other players as quickly as possible rather than ensuring they were matched up with the most appropriate opponents. While this made for a pleasingly fluid experience where you didn’t have to sit around waiting for very long, it also often led to the mismatched situations described above.
Titanfall takes aim at the cloud: ‘We’ve really let the designers go crazy’
Titanfall developer Respawn has updated the shooter’s matchmaking with more advanced metrics designed to better aid losing teams in finding more suitable matches. The new “Improved Matchmaking beta ” option is now available to try for the Classic Multiplayer mode. Respawn Entertainment has confirmed some more details about the upcoming matchmaking improvements that will be made to Titanfall, its online first-person shooter, and how the new Improved Matchmaking Beta will help it fine-tune the whole system. Titanfall is a competitive multiplayer-only first-person shooter in which two teams fight it out across many different maps and several various modes.
As players perform in-game actions, they not only develop a better game sense but also improve their gear, loadouts, and their collection of burn cards. Unfortunately, ever since the game’s release, the matchmaking system hasn’t exactly been the best at creating encounters with similarly matched opponents, as you could easily get a team with players of levels 1 through 10 that faced off against another team with levels in the 30s or 40s. Respawn noticed this problem and introduced last week the Improved Matchmaking Beta system that uses more parameters to ensure a better online experience.
Over on the official blog , Respawn has confirmed just how the old matchmaking system worked and what improvements are in the beta and will eventually appear for the game.

Searching for teammates and opponents will now sometimes take more time to look for players that are a good skill level match, rather than purely prioritizing speed over quality. Rather than playing against the same opponents over and over, the game will periodically split the teams apart and search for new opponents for each team. This means if one team is dominating, we will update the skill for all of the players and then find each team a better suited match for the next round.

While the launch may not have been completely spotless , it has shown considerable improvement post-launch. Following this trend, Respawn Entertainment is poised to address one of fans’ biggest complaints with the game with the implementation of an improved matchmaking system. On an overt level, players are able to see the paltry or impressive experience levels of both their opponents and their own team. Often though, this is not the best method of judging skill, with time invested sometimes having a much larger impact on a player’s level.
This is where the game’s hidden skill levels come into play. As such, it is not the experience level of a player that is used in the matchmaking algorithm, but rather the skill level. In it’s current state though, Respawn Entertainment feels as though the matchmaking system could be better optimized. It is not enough to just place players into a match that should theoretically be even, as other variables can throw this off and cause the sides to become uneven. To alleviate this, two significant changes have been issued in the form of a recently-added Attrition playlist called “Improved Matchmaking Beta “.

Gigantic star cruisers float overhead as smaller craft zip around them firing missiles at distant buildings; towering monsters lope across looming alien backdrops, attacking defensive walls; engineering robots make futile attempts to repair damaged facilities.

Following last week’s Improved Matchmaking Beta, developer Respawn has issued an update for mechanized shooter Titanfall that improves matchmaking in both the “Attrition” and “Hardpoint” game types. This update has been designed to counter one of Titanfall’s most glaring flaws: its seemingly random method of matching would-be titan pilots in multiplayer. Titanfall itself has received glowing praise , but few would argue that the original matchmaking system made any sort of sense.
Though this update will not affect matchmaking in the Campaign portion of Titanfall , Respawn claims that further matchmaking updates are on the way, just as soon as the studio can properly test their changes. Titanfall’s matchmaking update is available to all players at no charge and should be installed the next time you fire up your giant robot of choice. Buyer’s Guide.

No seriously, listen here. It genuinely felt like the heart and soul of Titanfall had been gutted, replaced with a game of Call of Duty catch-up, sluggish pilots and an overall balance of gameplay that wiped the field of any fun that the original had accomplished. Fortunately Respawn Entertainment has been listening. We identified two major issues we wanted to solve in Titanfall 2. The first is that a lack of player predictability would often cause players to be shot from the back or sides.
While flanking is an important part of gameplay, death often felt random instead of skillful. The second issue is that close range firefights were overly chaotic due to erratic player movement. So, changes to Pilot mobility stemmed from a desire to improve our gunplay, and not a desire to slow down movement. DeRose also explained that more varied maps will be on offer than what was seen in the limited beta, and several big changes to the Titans themselves.
Titans will now have a slightly quicker recharge on their dash ability, while players will also receive a passive charge to their titanfall ability, as opposed to making it a killstreak bonus:.
